College Hall was built between 1442 and 1450. Although three fireplaces were added to the hall at this time, they were left without chimneys and then covered over when panelling was added to the interior walls in 1547.
To warm the hall, a louvre was instead installed in the centre of the roof, so that the room could be warmed by an open hearth beneath. This work shows the large charcoal brazier, which replaced the open hearth. The louvre, which allowed smoke to pass out of the hall, can be seen above.
