Comments
The eel industry flourished along the Thames, and fishermen like Jack Straw kept the swelling straw traps together with the long triangular nets in their sheds ready for use, providing local artists such as Edmund Bristow with a distinctive subject for painting, while artists such as de Wint painted other points on the Thames, where the nets were fixed in a line ready to drop into the water. William painted several pictures on the theme, such as his Mending Eel Pots and Interior of a Fishing Shed on the Thames, both shown at the RWS, 1830. The Drawing School Portfolio includes a pupil's chalk copy of this lithograph.
