The 1st Battalion of the Black Watch are here shown attacking enemy defences at the Battle of Tel El Kebir (or Tell El Kebir), in Egypt, which was fought on 13 September 1882. The original oil painting on which this print is based was painted by French artist Alphonse Marie de Neuville in 1883. The painting is held in the collection of the National War Museum, Edinburgh Castle.
