Description
Printed head-and-shoulders portrait of a woman; wearing necklaces and hair jewellery but otherwise naked
Comments
Jane Shore, mistress of King Edward IV, is said to have given protection to both Eton and Henry VI’s other educational institution, King’s College, Cambridge.
This print was engraved from a 16th-century oil-on-panel painting at King’s College. The original is now thought to be by a French artist from the School of Fontainebleau and the work may in fact represent Diane de Poitiers (1500-1566), mistress of King Henri II of France. However, it has long been known as 'Jane Shore' and is described in a 1660 inventory of the works at King’s as 'Jane Shoar's picture'.
