Description

A publication in thirty-four parts of seven hundred and thirty-eight copperplate engravings of plants collected on Captain James Cook's first voyage round the world in H.M.S. Endeavour, 1768-1771.
The set includes a catalogue (78 pages, illustrated with black and white prints), and each part is housed in a solander box, with brown card folders, title page, description of the engravings, text and presentation of the set, and a list of plates. Each print is accompanied by a lettered mount.

Materials & techniques note

The engravings have been printed in colour á la poupee, each plate measuring 457 x 305mm and printed on sheets of 300gsm Somerset mould-made paper measuring 724 x 556mm. Each plate is protected by a double-fold sheet of Somerset mould-made 330gsm paper cut out to form a window mount.

The typography was designed by Ian Mortimer, hand-set in Founders' Caslon Old face and Old Face Open, and printed on a 19th century Albion handpress.
