Comments
Eton master and watercolourist H.E. Luxmoore was approached by publisher A & C Black to paint illustrations for a book about Eton. He produced a series of watercolours of lesser-known views of the College. A & C Black urged him to add in the famous sites or collaborate with another artist. But Luxmoore refused and instead self-funded the publication of a portfolio of prints for framing, titled Eton from a Backwater. He gave the profits to the Eton Memorial Building Fund, which raised money for the construction of School Hall and Library as memorials to Old Etonians who had fallen in the Boer War.
This work is from a group of prints and books bequeathed to Eton by Basil David Barton (1920-2009), who was at Eton in the 1930s and opening batsman for the first XI.
