Description
Printed portrait of a young king, full-length, standing, facing to the right, within a gothic arch; wearing crown, robes and fur-lined cloak; holding an orb and sceptre
Comments
Amis’s devotion to his old school is demonstrated by his acquisition of this portrait print of the founder of Eton College, King Henry VI (reigned 1422–61 & 1470–71), which he displayed at his home. Henry stands beneath a Gothic arch, holding his orb and sceptre. This etching was published with a similar print of former Archbishop of Canterbury Henry Chichele (c.1362–1443).
Chichele and Henry VI were co-founders of All Souls College, Oxford, and the two prints are based on drawings of stainedglass panels from the north window of the antechapel in the chapel at All Souls. The stained-glass panel was made during the reign Henry VI. In Bartolozzi and his Works (Andrew White Tuer, London 1881) this print is described as ‘very fine and scarce’.
This portrait print of Henry VI is derived from a window of All Souls College in Oxford.
