Watercolourist Edith Brinton, the sister of an Eton master, accepted the commission from publishers A & C Black to produce watercolour illustrations for a book about Eton after Eton master H.E. Luxmoore pulled out of the project.
The publication was part of A & C Black's series of colour plate books, published from 1901 onwards, using the newly invented three colour printing process. Published in 1909, Eton was written by Christopher Stone and included 20 colour illustrations, including this example, by Brinton.
