Edward Balston served as an Assistant Master at Eton College from 1840. In 1860, he was elected a Fellow. Two years later, on 25 February 1862, Balston became Head Master.
In 1868 Balston retired from the position of Head Master (but remained a Fellow) and dedicated himself to his religious career.
Balston died on 29 November 1891 and is buried at Eton.
