Painted half-length portrait of a young man, wearing a blue coat and white stock, holding a book
Comments
The sitter was a boy at Eton College from 1775 to 1784.
A review of the 1910 catalogue of the Eton College portraits includes:
'It should... be noted that the portrait of William Tighe by Romney, of which a full-plate illustration is given [in Cust, L., 'Eton College Portraits', 1910], is stated to be a duplicate of the version at Rosanna, Co. Wicklow, in the possession of Lt. Col. Tighe. The reproduction, said to be from this duplicate, shown in 'Romney: Catalogue Raisonné' by Messrs. Ward and Roberts, is an entirely different portrait, and cannot represent the same person; it may, perhaps, be Henry, younger brother of William Tighe.'
