The Brodrick Family in Montem uniform, with Windsor Castle in the distance

George Brodrick, 3rd Viscount Midleton had four sons, of which this is a portrait of two.
The sons were: George Brodrick, 4th Viscount Midleton (1754-1836), Thomas Brodrick (1756-1795), Charles Brodrick (1761-1822) and John Brodrick (1756/9-1842).
Two members of the Brodrick family are depicted in elaborate 'Montem' costume; the older boy as Salt-Bearer, carrying a salt purse matching his silk costume. Behind is a view of the north front of Windsor Castle, with the Round Tower shown flying the largest (ceremonial) size of the Royal Standard in honour of George III’s birthday, on the 4th June.
