The sitter is John Thomas 'Solomon' Harris, who worked as a 'Lusher' of top hats at New & Lingwood, a gentlemen’s outfitter, in Eton. At the time the portrait was exhibited he was aged 73 and had been in the role for 42 years. He was called Solomon after his father, who had made hats and had a shop in Eton.
The original portrait, which is still in the possession of New & Lingwood, at their Jermyn Street branch, in London, was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1926.
