Called 'Edward Wise' in 'Below Stairs: 400 years of Servants Portraits', ed. by Anne French and Giles Waterfield (London: National Portrait Gallery Publications, 2003), p. 81 (see fig. 15). The caption for fig. 15 identifies the butler and cites in a footnote the source for this information: 'Information from Timothy Connor, Eton College'.

A photo of the painting is at the Yale Center for British Art, which gives as the source for the photograph 'Courtauld B73/262.'
