Half-length portrait of a young man, in a red coat, green waistcoat and a white stock, seated at a table, his hand resting on drawings
'The eldest son of Sir William Maynard, Bt. of Walthamstow, Essex. On his mother's side he was related to the Boscawen family. He is said to have been clever at drawing horses while a boy in the school, and by 1769 was in Sixth Form. In 1776 he married 'Nancy' Parsons, a woman of some reputation (she was described by Horace Walpole as 'everybody's Mrs. Horton').
The sitter was at Eton from 1764 to 1769. He later became 5th Baronet and 2nd Viscount Maynard.
