Painted in around 1640, this is a study for an early work by Jan Boeckhorst (c.1604-1668) titled 'Calvary' (c.1640), an oil-on-canvas painting at the Sint-Pieterskerk church in the town of Lo, in West Flanders, Belgian.
Boeckhorst's painting demonstrates the influence Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) and is in fact directly inspired by Rubens's painting 'Christ on the Cross between two Thieves' (Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Antwerp).
