Comments

Information from unpublished Margaret Carpenter catalogue by Richard J Smith, 1995.

Oil on panel. c.10x8". Attribution probable. Not in Cust. No mention of this name in Sitters Book. This portrait came to Eton from the Farrer Bequest, and there is a Sitters' Book entry for a Coleridge-type panel as yet untraced:
1838 Mr Farrare £21.-.-. [M38003] Picture seen, but more information on 'Farrer' required.

Notes in the NPGA and the Witt Library have this Eton picture as being of B.W.F.Drake, last Captain of Montem in 1844 [S44329], but this is 'definitely not correct' - according to Paul Quarrie. Photo: Courtauld ref. B73/307.

The NPGA and Witt Library also have a totally different picture [S34330] called "J.P.W.Bastard" (oil on panel c.20x8") in the Eton College collection, but the true identity of this sitter is unknown. Photo: Courtauld ref. B73/306. [Annotated: B.W.F.Drake by Margaret Carpenter.]

A scion of the distinguished Devon family, he became a soldier.
