Inscribed on verso on stretcher, in black pen: ' “BENABBIO MORNING NO.2” – started 11th July, Saturday, 1970. It’s companion “Benabbio morning No 1” (Coll: Nigel Haigh) was started on Monday 6th. The timing was 7.0 am to 8.15 for No 1 and 8.15 – 10.0 for No 2 (this picture) No 1 was finished on Thurs AM 20 and This one the next day 21st / I have 2 diary entries relating to the question of “finish” / of this painting / – 1 “When it’s no longer in ones power to paint well on a picture, it’s finished”, and 2 (Entry for Aug 21st) “I honestly don’t believe that much if any more could have been done to improve the picture.” '
