Description
Half-length painted portrait of a man in military uniform, holding a helmet in one hand
Comments
The sitter was a boy Eton from 1791-96. He became a cornet in the regiment on 26 September 1799, lieutenant on 19 March 1801, transferring to the 60th Foot on 24 July 1801. He had various other transfers, eventually leaving the army on 4 March 1807 on the sale of his commission. This portrait of circa 1800 shows his 'tarleton' helmet, and may have been painted to mark his commission as a cornet.
