Painted three-quarter length portrait of a yung man with one hand on hip
Comments
This unusually large Leaving Portrait shows George Curzon-Howe, who left Eton aged 17 for Christ Church, Oxford. He later served in the Leicestershire Yeomanry Cavalry and became MP for the Southern Division of Leicestershire. Curzon is painted with a whip, probably a reference to his interest in fox hunting.
Margaret Carpenter painted at least 26 Leaving Portraits for the collections of John Keate (Head Master 1809–34) and Edward Craven Hawtrey (Head Master 1834–53). She also produced portraits for the families of Eton boys and numerous small-scale Leaving Portraits for Assistant Master Edward Coleridge.
