Information from unpublished Margaret Carpenter catalogue by Richard J Smith, 1995.
Oil on canvas. 30x25". Attribution uncertain. Cust p.45. Sitters' Book: 1838 Mr Herbert £21.-.-. [M38021] This payment refers to a Coleridge panel now in the collection at Powis Castle. Thus there is either a payment missing, or the Eton portrait is not by Margaret Carpenter. A similar Sitters' Book payment in 1829 probably refers to another Herbert who was a pupil of Coleridge. Not seen.
The sitter was a boy at Eton College from 1830 to 1835. He was later 3rd Earl of Powis and served as High Steward of Cambridge University.
