Comments
The son of Edmund Bastard of Kitley, Devon. The family was important in the area, being possessed of considerable estates. Both his father and his uncle had been to Eton. In 1802 he was in Sixth Form. In 1869 two sets of Latin verses by him were printed in the Musae Etonenses.
He became M.P. for Dartmouth (1812-1816) and subsequently was M.P. for Devon, his uncle's former seat. He continued to represent Devon until 1830 'upon independent principles, never giving any pledge to vote upon measures until he had heard their merits fully discussed ...'
Thomas Phillips R.A. (1784-1838)
Before enrolling as an Academy student, Phillps worked with Benjamin West at Windsor. With a fashionable address in St.George's Street, Hanover Square, his painting of the Prince of Wales, 1806, established him as a society painter. In 1825 he became Professor of Painting at the Academy, and his lectures were printed after his resignation in 1833. His five Leaving Portraits were executed between 1802 and 1819.
The sitter was a boy at Eton College form 1796 to 1802.
