Description
Half-length painted portrait of a young man
Comments
One of the Representative Peers for Ireland, Du Pre Alexander succeeded his father as 2nd Earl of Caledon in 1802. He married Catherine, the daughter of the 3rd Earl of Hardwick, in 1811.
Despite the dates given on the label attached to the frame of this work, Alexander began at Eton aged 13 but remained for just two years. This explains the sitter’s particularly youthful appearance in his Leaving Portrait, which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1796. A ‘sketch or replica’ of the portrait was amongst the work sold at Hoppner’s studio sale in 1823. This may have been a version made for the sitter’s family which was rejected.
