Comments
When Henry Godolphin was appointed Provost of Eton College in 1695, he had already been a Fellow for the past 18 years. A Dean of St Paul's and Fellow of All Souls', Oxford, his brother was Sidney, Earl of Godolphin (1645–1712), Lord High Treasurer from 1702. Henry contributed £1,000 to the interior refurbishment of College Chapel in the style of Sir Christopher Wren (1699–1703; since replaced) and paid for the Founder's statue in School Yard (installed 1719). On his death in 1732, he left money for improvements to the boys' accommodation in College.
Eton Master A.C. Benson commented on how unflattering this portrait, by an as yet unidentified artist, is:
There is an interesting portrait of Provost Godolphin in the Lodge at Eton, with puckered eyes and a small indrawn mouth, giving an anile expression to the face, which would otherwise have been good-humoured.
[A.C. Benson, Fasti Etonenses, 1899]
The sitter was the 23rd Provost of Eton College (1691-1732).
