Comments
Information from unpublished Margaret Carpenter catalogue by Richard J Smith, 1995.
Oil on canvas. 36x30". Attribution uncertain. Sitters Book: 1840 Mr Seymour £21.-.-. [M40019] This payment is not appropriate to this size picture, and may refer to a Coleridge panel; or possibly to a Seymour connected to the Smith family of Suttons. Not seen.
The sitter was a boy at Eton from 1835 to 1839 and became a Newcastle Scholar.
This portrait has been attributed to Margaret Carpenter. A smaller (24.5 x 19.5cm) oil-on-panel portrait of John Billingsley Seymour by Carpenter was sold through Sotheby's at 'The Chanter's House Sale', on 24 October 2006 (Lot 24). The smaller portrait seems to have been painted when the sitter was younger.
