Comments
The son of William Howard, Viscount Andover, who had also been educated at Eton. At Oxford, he was described as 'a pretty young man, lively and natural'. At the Coronation of George III he bore the second Sword of State. From 1763 until 1765 he was deputy Earl Marshal, and later held various political appointments. This is the earliest of the Leaving Portraits.
Allan Ramsay (1713-1784)
Contact with the Italian artist Imperiali between 1736 and 1738 gave this Scottish artist insight into the Italian manner of portrait painting, popular with the English Grand Tourist. His later prominent position in England was threatened by the youthful Reynolds. Before 1761, when he was given a lucrative appointment of Portrait Painter to George III, he had amassed a fortune of £40,000.
