This work was commissioned by Eugene Millington Drake for the Austen Leigh Gallery, within School Hall. The panels of the gallery were hung with portraits relevant to the First World War library Millington Drake created within School Library. Anstruther was a contempory of Millington Drake's at Eton, had been a particular friend of his from outside his boarding house, and was described by Millington Drake as “the first of them [his friends] to fall”.
