Description
Half-length painted portrait of a young man
Comments
This teenage portrait shows future three-time Prime Minister and classicist Edward Stanley, who remains the longest serving leader of the Conservative Party. It was painted for John Keate, appropriately the longest serving Head Master at Eton (1809–34). Unfortunately, Keate did not request a Leaving Portrait from Stanley's contemporary W. E. Gladstone. It seems likely that Stanley’s father, the 13th Earl of Derby, commissioned the two very similar versions of this portrait: this work for Dr Keate and another version which was sent to Knowsley Hall, the ancestral home of the Earls of Derby, where it still hangs.
The sitter was a boy at Eton College from 1811 to 1817.
