Comments
In 1987 Grey Gowrie published a monograph on his friend Hill, in which Hill’s memories of painting Lord Hailsham are recorded:
I painted the Lord Chancellor in his House of Lords office, at his request without a wig… it was a delight. I loved him... It was a chaotic sitting … There’d be a bang on the door and his secretary would come in and say, ‘The President of Malaysia’ – or whoever it was – and then the Lord Chancellor would say, ‘Oh do come in, I can’t get up, I’m being painted.’
Gowrie borrowed the work for a week-long exhibition dedicated to Hill at The Redfern Gallery, London, in 2016.
