Comments
Bernard Drake KS, won the Newcastle Scholarship at Eton and was the last Captain of Montem in 1844.
This portrait is by Margaret Carpenter, who painted at least 26 oil-on-canvas Leaving Portraits (mostly standard 30 x 25 inch size) for Eton Head Masters John Keate (HM 1809-34) and Edward Craven Hawtrey (HM 1834-53). She also produced numerous small-scale (10 x 8 inch) oil-on-board Leaving Portraits for other Eton masters, particularly Rev. Edward Coleridge, who served as Lower Master (1850-57). This example may have been painted for the sitter's Tutor, Charles Old Goodford, who later served as Head Master (1853-62) and Provost (1862-84) at Eton.
