Paper label on verso, inscribed in pen & ink: 'William Patten, called Waynflete. / Born at Wainfleet, Lincolnshire. / Educated at Winchester School & at Oxford. / 1st Provost of Eton, 1440. (Cassell.) / Provost of Eton, 1442. (Maunder.) / Bishop of Winchester, 1447. / Lord Chancellor, 1456-1460. / Founded Magdalen College, Oxford, 1456. / Died 11th August, 1486.'
