Title
View of Eton from the Fifteen Arch bridge, with travellers and other figures
Comments
This painting may have been a later copy done by the artist. The architectural and topographical elements are almost identical, as are the figures on the road, although the proportions and arrangement of the right-hand tree are somewhat different. The provenance of this version is not known and leaves us with a puzzle as to why the Collections should have these two versions of De Cort's painting.
Hendrick Frans de Cort was a Flemish artist who worked in Antwerp and Paris before settling in England after 1789. A painter of country houses, castles, cathedrals and other views, he frequently exhibited at the Royal Academy and the British Institution between 1790 and 1806. Here he paints Eton from the Fifteen-Arch Bridge, a view chosen by several 18th- and 19th-century topographical artists.
