Half-length portrait of a young man, in a blue coat, and a white waistcoat and stock, in a landscape
Comments
The second son of the 4th Earl Waldegrave, he entered Eton together with his brother, George, Lord Waldegrave. On 29th June 1794 his brother was drowned at Eton while swimming in the river and was buried in the chapel at Eton. John James then inherited the title. In May 1802, following his father, he joined the Foot Guards, and from 1812 until 1819 held the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the 54th Regiment of Foot. He served in the Peninsular War and in Flanders, commanding the 54th in the campaign which led to Waterloo. He died at Strawberry Hill, which had become the family home.
John Hoppner R.A. (1758-1810)
Hoppner's portrait style was indebted to Reynold's work, but this was adapted in competition with his main rivals. While the influence of Romney was advantageous, that of Lawrence was less benign. A vindictive man, he nevertheless excelled in painting children, and was the obvious choice for fifteen Eton Leaving Portraits.
The sitter was a pupil at Eton from 1773 to 1802; afterwards a Lt. Colonel in the 54th Foot Regiment and served at the Battle of Waterloo.
