Comments
Information from unpublished Margaret Carpenter catalogue by Richard J Smith, 1995.
Oil on panel. c.9.5x8.5". Attribution definite. Cust p.48. Sitters Book: 1841 Mr Cust £21.-.-. [M41001] 1843 Mr Cust £21.-.-. [M42012] A fee of 20 gns. would be right for this size of portrait. According to the Dictionary of National Biography two additional copies were painted, and were (1910) in the possession of members of the sitter's family. Their present whereabouts is not known. Although Cust was not a pupil of Coleridge, it is possible that this was originally painted for his tutor, and thence came into the main Eton collection. Not seen. Photo: Courtauld ref. B73/305.
