This is a portrait of siblings Elfrida and Altham Moulton-Barrett. The work was lent to the Royal Academy Winter Exhibition of 1898 by the father of the children depicted, Octavius Moulton Barrett. In the catalogue of the exhibition, the work is described as follows:
'Two nearly life - size figures, looking at the spectator; the girl (a full length) in sea - green dress, is sitting on a table, holding a rose in her lap; the boy (a three - quarter figure) in a fancy dress of citron velvet, leans on the table beside her, with his right arm behind him. Signed with monogram, and dated 1881. Canvas, 49 by 39 in.'
