Comments
For most of the life of Alfred Conybeare (known as ‘Cony’) Eton was home. He arrived as a boy, aged 13. After three years as an undergraduate at Cambridge, he served successively as Assistant Master, House Master, Head of Maths, Lower Master and Vice Provost. Cony was a familiar figure to generations of boys and staff, distinctive in his earlier years for his vivid red hair.
Portrait and still life painter Leonard Appelbee was among the 60 artists commissioned to produce large paintings for the 1951 Festival of Britain. His career ended prematurely after he broke his leg in a boating accident in 1977, which prevented him from standing at an easel.
