Half-length oil portrait of a male figure with fair/blond hair; black jacket, black clerical shirt, white neck tie

Comments

This canvas was cut down in 1971. Part of the original painted canvas, which shows the artist's signature and the date of the work, has been cut out and stapled to the back of the stretcher. Also, a painted inscription on the back of the canvas is partially cut off by the stretcher. These things indicate that the portrait was once considerably larger, but for some reason it was cut down in the past.

Notes on the sitter: Born 1790, entered Eton 1802; King's Scholar 1804; Trinity College, Cambridge, 1809. Appointed Chaplain and Librarian to George IV in 1820. Bishop of Llandaff and Dean of St Pauls, 1826. Bishop of Winchester, 1827. Died 1874.
