Comments

This is one of a series of seven paintings collectively known as the 'Seven Halts on the Somme'.

Royal Academician Hughie O'Donoghue was Artist-in-Residence at the Drawing Schools at Eton College in 2013. During the residency he had access to the Eton College Collections and became immersed in material relating to the Battle of the Somme. His series of seven paintings, collectively titled 'Seven Halts on the Somme', were produced partly in response to this material. Each painting evokes a specific location in northern France, where the British arm was stopped and engaged in conflict during the battle.
