Young Man with a Cello
assigned by cataloguer
Full-length portrait of a seated young man, with a cello and music stand
This small (14 x 11 inches) oil-on-panel portrait probably depicts a former Eton boy, as a student of King’s College, Cambridge. It shows the young man in a musical and scholarly environment; seated within an interior, in front of a music stand. A cello leans against a large bookcase behind the figure and through the window can be seen a church, seemingly the chapel of King's College, Cambridge.
The artist is Edmund Bristow. Born in 1787 at Clewer, Bristow was the son of a heraldic painter. He had no formal art training but received commissions from significant patrons, including the Duke of Clarence (later William IV). Bristow’s paintings, generally small in scale, include still lifes and portraits of Eton characters, as well as animal and genre scenes.
