Comments

This bright, small-scale view of Eton, shows College Chapel and the Foundation buildings from the river. It was painted by local artist Clifford Montague.

Born in Tilehurst, Berkshire, in 1858, Montague trained at the London School of Art. He produced this work early in his career and by 1881 had already moved to live with his widowed sister, Julia, in Devon. Shortly after the move he married and then lived briefly in Cornwall and Staffordshire, before settling in Talgarreg, Ceredigion, in Wales. By 1905 he had ten children and, despite his prolific output of small, rural landscapes and genre scenes, Clifford struggled to support his large family.

Sadly he lived to witness the outbreak of war in 1914 and the tragedy of losing a son, Stanley, at Ypres in 1915. He was only briefly survived by another son, Ralph, who died close to the resting place of his brother, in 1917. Clifford was buried that year in an unmarked grave, near his home in Wales.
