This work is a copy after Sir Joshua Reynolds' spectacular full-length portrait of Frederick Howard, 5th Earl of Carlisle of 1769 (Tate collection).
Sitter was at Eton from 1756 to 1764; afterwards Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and K.G.
Sitter is described by Lionel Cust in his 1910 catalogue of the Eton portraits as 'Frederick, Viscount Morpeth'.
