Comments
Robert Edward Morrison was born in the town of Peel, on the Isle of Man. He moved to Liverpool at the age of 18 and was employed as a house painter. However, at 21 he enrolled at the Liverpool School of Art, before studying at Heatherley’s Art School in London and the Académie Julian, Paris, under William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825–1905) and Tony RobertFleury (1837–1911).
Morrison returned to Liverpool, where he established himself as a portrait painter, particularly of civic and public figures. His landscape studies, like this example, were on the whole made as recreation. Morrison exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and the Royal Academy, London. He served as President of the Liverpool Academy for ten years.
