Description
Half-length portrait of a young man, face three-quarters to the right; bluish-grey coat, white stock, powdered hair
Comments
Henry de la Poer Beresford, styled Earl of Tyrone (1789–1800), became Member of Parliament for Londonderry County (1790–1801) and Coleraine (1798). As he left Eton, Head Master Jonathan Davies requested his Leaving Portrait. Artist William Beechey was paid 15 guineas, probably by Tyrone or his father, for this work in 1790. Beechey painted at least nine Eton Leaving Portraits, most in 1790. He was a successful and fashionable artist at that time. In 1794 he became a full member of the Royal Academy, received a knighthood and exhibited His Majesty Reviewing the Third Dragoon Guards, his most celebrated work.
