'THE WAYNFLETE MEMORIAL.
On Tuesday, June 6th, the statue of William of Waynflete, first Head Master and second Provost of Eton, and afterwards Bishop of Winchester and Founder of Magdalen College, Oxford, the gift of old Etonians residing in, or connected with, Sussex, as a memorial of the 450th anniversary of the Foundation of the College, was unveiled by the Bishop of Chichester. The statue has been placed in a canopied niche in the central bay of
the west wall of the ante-chapel (built by Waynflete, mainly at his own expense), facing Keate's lane. The whole was designed by Sir Arthur Blomfield, A.R.A., and executed by T. Nicholls, Esq., who faithfully copied authentic portraits and effigies of Waynflete at Magdalen, Winchester, and elsewhere.

Beneath the Memorial is a stone bearing the following inscription, composed by the Provost of Eton:—

There was a somewhat small, but tolerably representative gathering of Sussex Etonians, viz.:—

The proceedings commenced with a short but admirably selected service in the Chapel at 1.30, conducted by the Provost and Conducts. It consisted of a few special prayers and responses : Psalms CXXIL and CXXV. to Chants 258 and 259 ; for the Lesson, Eccles. XLIV. to v. 16, read by the Provost. An admirable adaptation of the beautiful Founder's Day Hymn, the first and last verses being especially written for the occasion, and Hymn 437 A. and M. The Benediction was given by the Bishop of Chichester. The Sussex Etonians sat together in the Easternmost stalls and Seats, and the service was likewise attended by a considerable number of Masters, ladies, and boys.
The ceremony of unveiling took place immediately after; a space in the Long Walk, in front of the Memorial, having been railed off for the authorities and Sussex Etonians. The Provost, in a few well chosen words, expressed the pleasure with which the College accepted the Memorial, and requested the Bishop to unveil it, which he did, after a short reply, in which he laid stress, as did also the Provost, on the great services rendered by Waynflete to Eton.
After a short gathering in the College Library, the Sussex Etonians were most hospitably entertained at luncheon by the authorities in the Election Hall, in the Provost's Lodge. After the toast of "In Piam Memoriam," the Provost in felicitous terms proposed the health of the Sussex Etonians, to which the Bishop replied, in a speech full of eloquence and feeling, in the course of which he alluded to the loss sustained by Sussex, in the death of Viscount Hampden, the late Lord Lieutenant of the County, and the first Chairman of the Memorial Committee, who had taken a most warm and deep interest in the project. Speeches were also made by the Head Master and the President of Magdalen, and soon after the company dispersed, after a very successful ceremony and enjoyable afternoon.
