Description
Carved wooden statuette of Henry VI, in 16th-century Netherlandish style holding an orb and sceptre, with a dragon at his feet
Comments
This statuette shows Henry with the symbols of monarchy: the sceptre and orb. At his feet lies a heraldic antelope, shown with the face of the heraldic tiger, tusks, serrated horns, a lion’s tail and tufts down its back. It represents peace and harmony.
Made in the 20th-century, the figure is based on the earliest sculpted image of the Founder: a brass statuette which surmounts a lectern in the chapel of King’s College, Cambridge. The lectern was commissioned for the chapel in c.1515 by Robert Hacomblen (1455/6–1528), Provost of King’s from 1509 to 1528. As Hacomblen knew Henry VI, the statuette may, to some degree, be a portrait of the king.
After an original statuette of Henry VI that tops the 16th century bronze lectern in the choir of King's College Chapel, Cambridge.
