An 1895 newspaper report suggests this memorial was initially intended to be a brass.
'PROPOSED MEMORIAL TO THE REV. J. WILDER. - A movement is on foot among Old Etonians to place n the Eton College Chapel a memorial to the Rev. John Wilder, late Vice Provost. At the head of the movement is the Earl of Hopetown, the Earl of Onslow, Viscount Cobham, Viscount Halifax, Mr. W. G. Mount, M.P, Mr. C. T. Murdoch, M.P., the Archdeacon of Berks (Dr. Potts), Rev. Canon T. T. Carter, and Canon N. T. Garry. It is suggested that the memorial shall take the form of a memorial brass in the ante-chapel, and the Provost of Eton has given his consent. The Rev. John Wilder's connection with Eton extended over eighty years, and he is remembered for his liberality in connections with the restoration of the College Hall, and ornamentation of the College Chapel.'
