Incised lettering: 'JOHN HAY CALDWELL / Born March 9.1894 / at Eton September 1907 to July 1913. / Lieut.Cameron Highlanders / attached Royal Air Force I.E.F. Mesopotamia / was shot down while Flying Jan.12.1918 / and captured by the Turks. / He escaped and travelled / sixty miles on foot in the Desert / but died of exposure January 24 / fifteen miles from the British Lines. / In Memory of their only Son / this Court is dedicated by his Parents / to the use of the House which he loved.'
