Comments

A version of this bust by Nollekens is at Apsley House.

'...Lord Wellesley... is here represented by by the four lines which he composed "on his bust being placed in the Upper School in 1840."'
['The Poets of Eton College. Edited by John Gawsworth.', Eton College Chronicle, No. 2322, Thursday, December 13, 1934, p.1782]

'The busts in Upper School were added in the 1840's, in the reign of that fanatical protestant, Provost Hodgson...It was Wellesley who started the idea. He adored Eton all his life, everything about it and most of all Verses, and he lies buried, as he wishes, under the North door, so that the feet of countless generations of Eton boys might rumble over his everlasting rest. He presented his bust in 1840 (it was carved in 1808) and his brother, not to be outdone, gave his in 1845.'
['Eton Busts' by Oliver Van Oss, Etoniana, No.123, November 29, 1969, p.353-355].'
