'THE BALSTON MEMORIAL.
During the holidays a memorial to the late Archdeacon Balston has been erected by some of his old pupils, in Upper Chapel, on the right-hand side of the nave almost opposite the North door. The subscribers eventually decided to erect a handsome marble tombstone with a recumbent figure of the Archdeacon in alabaster upon it, and the contract was given to Messrs. Farmer and Brindley. The base is of Derbyshire alabaster with pillars of vert-vert, and there is a beautiful Latin inscription on the side. written by Mr. Hodgson, one of his pupils, and Newcastle Scholar in 1856, to the following effect:-
PRAECEPTORI OPTIMO
PATERNAM ERGA SE BENIGNITATEM
GRATA REVERENTIA PROSECUTI
POSUERUNT DISCIPULI.
All present and past Etonians should feel grateful for this handsome addition to our Chapel, not only for the sake of the cenotaph itself, but also as commemorative of one of the scholarly and accomplished of our Head Masters, and one of the most generous benefactors of the school in modern times.'
