William Johnson (afterwards Cory)

Sculpted bust showing a male nude.
'If the tutor was thus concious of the great qualities of the pupil, the pupil was equally conscious of the debt he owed to the tutor. He always spoke of him with affectionate admiration: not long ago - in 1927 - he gave us the bust by Wiles which is in the Memorial Building... The Period of Lord Rosebery's tenure of a Fellowship was marked by generous benefactions to Eton. ...his latest present, the bust of his old tutor, has already been mentioned. All these were evidences of a very true and lively affection for the School.'

'...a marble portrait-bust [of William Johnson (afterwards Cory)] by Henry Wiles, executed in 1864 has been rescued by Mr. Patrick Strong from basement storage and now stands in what was once the Myers Museum and is now in process of reconstruction as a Master’s Common Room. So, all in all, Eton is at last doing some belated justice to a long undeservedly forgotten son.'
