Provenance: Possibly purchased in Rome by Thomas Gold Appleton (1812-1884) of Boston [brother-in-law of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow] in the 1870s; by descent to his sister, Mrs Mary Mackintosh (née Appleton; 1813-1889); by descent to her daughter, Miss Eva Mackintosh (1843-1935); by whom left to residuary legatees Mrs Luard and Lady Evangeline Farrer of Abinger Hall, Dorking; by whom presented to Eton College in 1938
